The fifth critical element for the application of nylon products, in terms of safety, is fire. The need to guarantee personal and material safety and to limit the risk of fire has led to in-depth study of the behaviour of construction materials, and therefore also of plastics, to flames. This behaviour has been researched and harmonized over time in the USA by Underwriters Laboratories, who are authorised to issue Self-extinguishing Certification to the manufacturers of plastic materials, provided these meet specific requirements. The plastic materials accompanied by this certification are defined as “Self-extinguishing compliant with standard UL 94”. This certification is issued exclusively for raw materials. The self-extinguishing category of nylon is V2: UL 94 which means that the test specimen, after ignition, extinguishes within 30″ without propagating the flame, and simply “self-extinguishes”. Not all polyamides are self-extinguishing.
SapiSelco has opted to produce all standard cable ties and accessories in V2: UL 94 self-extinguishing nylon. The self-extinguishing test is part of the SapiSelco acceptance specifications for raw materials and the finished product.
